The ‘third stem’ in the Latin verb provides one of Aronoff’s best-known illustrations of the notion of ‘morphome’: unpredictably variable in form, it is also consistently associated with an abstract and heterogeneous pattern of distribution. My perspective is diachronic, exploring the history of the third stem as it continues into Romance (especially Romanian). My findings support the ‘psychological reality’ of the morphome for successive generations of speakers, but suggest also that unity of lexical meaning is of central importance in the diachronic persistence of morphomes in general, such persistence finding an explanation, perhaps surprisingly, in universal principles of form-meaning iconicity.
Le terme de ‘third stem’ (‘troisième thème’) désigne un élément de la morphologie verbale latine qui constitue l’un des principaux exemples dont se sert Mark Aronoff pour illustrer l’idée du ‘morphome’: c’est-à-dire, une entité dont la forme peut varier de façon imprévisible d’un verbe à l’autre, mais qui obéit sans exception à une distribution qui suit le même schéma paradigmatique tout à fait hétérogène. J’examine ce ‘troisième thème’ à la lumière de la diachronie, en étudiant son évolution dans les langues romanes (et surtout en roumain). Il ressort de cette étude non seulement que le morphome en question a conservé sa ‘réalité psychologique’ d’une génération à l’autre, mais aussi que l’unité de la signification lexicale joue un rôle fondamental dans la continuité diachronique des morphomes, pour des raisons qui semblent dépendre — chose inattendue — de principes généraux d’iconicité entre forme et signifié.
Der dritte Stamm (‘third stem’) des lateinischen Verbs ist eines von Mark Aronoffs bekanntesten Beispielen zur Veranschaulichung des Begriffs ‘Morphom’: Es handelt sich dabei um ein Element, dessen Form sich unvorhersehbar von einem Verb zum nächsten ändern kann, dessen Verbreitung jedoch auch lückenlos und nach einem abstrakten, heterogenen Muster erfolgt. Ich betrachte dieses Phänomen aus diachronischer Perspektive und untersuche seine geschichtliche Entwicklung in den romanischen Sprachen, insbesondere im Rumänischen. Meine Ergebnisse bestätigen die ‚psychologische Realität‘ des Morphoms für aufeinanderfolgende Generationen von Sprechern und lassen darauf schließen, dass die Einheit der lexikalischen Bedeutung von grundlegender Bedeutung für das diachronische Fortdauern der Morphome ist. Dieses Fortdauern liegt — vielleicht zu unserem Erstaunen — in universellen Prinzipien der Ikonizität zwischen Form und Bedeutung begründet.
