| Rezumat: | Based on Alfred J. Lopez’s view (Post and Pasts: A Theory of Postcolonialism, Albany: SUNY Press, 2001) that regards the magic in magic realism as indigenous and established genres like realism or romance as Western, this critical essay also analyzes the impact of the Romanian historical and cultural tradition on Agopian’s novel Velvet Tache. Published in 1981, the novel is a magic realist narrative that represents a stepping stone in the emancipation of Romanian fiction from the dogmatic socialist realism of the the 1950s and the fictional attempts at the canonical realism of the 1970s and 1980s Romanian prose. Told as a retrospective projection from Tache’s own grave, Velvet Tache offers an uncommon form of autobiography, in the tradition of Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis’s Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas or Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Written from beyond the grave, with all the advantages of perfect insight, Tache’s memoir is a digressive and fragmented account of a man’s life in Oltenia, a region whose cultural space and troubled history become metonymic of the first half of nineteenth-century southern Romania. |
