Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate the diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic dimensions of the Romanian folk names given to lower plants. The folk names, gathered from dictionaries and lists of plant names, were analyzed from the perspective of the spatial- geographical, social and stylistic variations. The particularities of these names (all part of a folk nomenclature incompletely recorded) have imposed an analysis based on a list of names that do not syntagmatically combine with other linguistic signs, rather than one based on the relations that these names establish when used in discourse.
Key words:diatopic, diastratic, diaphasic, folk names, lower plants
