Abstract:[Names of Romanian wines and grape varieties]
As any other gastronomic product, wine is also identified by means of names. The names given to wines become, more often than not, national cultural brands. The phrases that designate wines constitute a heterogeneous semantic class, as most of the times they are motivated noun phrases, which require, in order to be decoded, diversified extralinguistic knowledge regarding culture, history, universal or local mythology: Lacrima lui Ovidiu, Prince Matei, Castelul Huniade, Miorița, Sirena Dunării, Golem, 7 Păcate. At the same time, the names of wines can include native and/or foreign anthroponyms, showing different degrees of adaptation (Conu’ Alecu), or various (Romanian or international) appellatives that have become proper nouns: Făurar, Menestrel, Monşer, Terra Romana, Anima.
