Abstract:[Clitic Doubling and Agreement in Romanian] In this article, I present some arguments against the hypothesis that clitic doubling (CD) in Romanian is an agreement phenomenon: (i) CD is optional, depending on the semantic type of the direct object, whilst agreement phenomena are obligatory; (ii) the direct object marked by CD is +specific. Specificity is not one of the features implied in agreement phenomena in Romanian (these features are gender, number, person and case); (iii) in general, agreement is redundant, it doesn't contribute new information; (iv) all the other agreement phenomena in Romanian are marked by inflectional affixes; the elements involved in CD are pronominal clitics, not affixes (according to several morphological tests).
