| Abstract: | In this paper, we examine several aspects of linguistic change within the domain of relative clauses in Romanian, insisting on the interpretation of the relative pronoun ceea ce. In Romanian linguistic literature, ceea ce is described either as a compound form, or as a free group of two pronouns: a demonstrative pronoun and a relative pronoun. The paper argues that in particular contexts, ceea ce exhibits several features which seem to authorize a disjoint interpretation. In contexts where ceea ce allows substitution with ce, it should be considered a group of two pronominals (ceea, the demonstrative, being the antecedent of the moved relative ce). In contexts where the substitution test fails, ceea ce requires a different interpretation: a compound form, acting rather like a conjunction than as a wh-element. |
