Abstract:
The article explores the possibility of reinterpreting grammatical voice as a cognitive category placed in the leftmost position of the left periphery. There are four available perspectives for a speaker to present an event to a hearer: (i) the agent perspective, (ii) the pacient and the beneficiary perspective, (iii) the event perspective, and (iv) the relational perspective. Strategies of perspectivation vary across cultures and index cultural ways of conceptualizing the world and mapping it on linguistic structures. The present analysis focuses the Romanian case and describes the structures projected by each perspective via morphosyntactic, lexical, discursive and pragmatic strategies. The cognitive approach to voice shifts the research interest from the principle-parametric account to the effects of perspective on the structure of sentences across languages.
