| Abstract: | [The “Romglish” of tourism in the context of globalization] Our analysis aimed at studying the impact of English as a global language on the Romanian terminology of tourism industry. The corpus picked up from both print and online sources (specialized dictionaries, travel agencies websites, and tourist brochures in printed form) consists of a large number of compound terms and phrases borrowed from English as such that are of interest not only for specialists in the field of tourism and their clients, but also for linguists and lexicographers. The great majority of these borrowings – that have no Romanian equivalents – are “necessary” Anglicisms, not registered in the Romanian dictionaries yet despite their international character and their high frequency in use. Starting from the premise that the novelty and the dynamics of this terminology are strongly influenced by the process of globalization and marketing strategies, we have paid special attention to the informative, persuasive and advertising functions performed by such terms in the particular field of tourism. In conclusion, in spite of its negative connotations, we consider that the hybrid jargon jocularly called “Romgleză” (a blend of Rom[anian] and [En]gleză) could be seen as a technical register playing an important role in the internationalization of the Romanian vocabulary. |
