Abstract:[Pragmatics and anthroponymy (Theoretical considerations on the system of appellatives in contemporary Romanian)]
The present research aims to present a number of theoretical suggestions regarding the study of anthroponymy from the perspective of pragmatics. Unlike traditional viewpoints, which relate to distinct language levels whose real unity within the system can only be construed subsequently, pragmatic anthroponymy has to explore the levels that are hierarchically subordinated to the communicative function of language. The pragmaticisation of anthroponymy does not only aim, in view of the aforementioned, to reinterpret linguistic material based on a new method, but also to expand its framework-object, through the revision of old concepts and the integration of the issue of anthroponymy in the field of investigation of pragmatics. Thus, this paper suggests a definition for the notion of appellative, as an element of research in anthroponymy (based on a functional principle of definition, according to two criteria: potential allocutivity and deictic function), along with a semantic and morphosyntactic classification of appellatives.
The paper includes the communicative functions of appellatives (conative and phatic), underlining the fact that some of the appellatives presented (see the instances of unconventional anthroponyms – public nicknames, bynames, user/chat names), due to frequent use, tend to be pragmaticised, hence developing functions that bring them closer to social and empathetic deictics.
As regards the unit of anthroponymic research, the advantage of this perspective is that it reunites, in a single category, classes that were until recently explicitly incompatible with the object of study of anthroponymy (albeit some of these were already being analysed by specialists).
