Abstract:[Surnames originating in military ranks: Interferences and trends]
The vast Romanian anthroponymic inventory consists of surnames that belong to different categories, depending on the means of their formation and origin. This study deals with a specific category of Romanian surnames that are derived from appellatives designating military ranks. The research will take into consideration the historic conditions in which these names emerged, the influences they underwent and the cultural interferences inherent to the formation process of the names. It will especially refer to the region of Bessarabia. Moreover, it will investigate whether (and to what extent) the appellatives that constitute the basis of the analysed names are used in the current vocabulary of the Romanian language or fell out of use.
