Abstract:[This article describes and analyzes Romanian complex predicates which contain auxiliaries/modals placed before the infinitive. They are attested in a 16th to 18th century corpus (for old Romanian) and in a 19th century corpus (for modern Romanian). The article focuses on the differences in syntactic behaviour between complex predicates in the corpora and in present-day Romanian.]
