| Abstract: | [History of Lexical Items with Multiple Etymologies] Borrowings represent the natural result of the changes that have taken place in society. The new words enter the language at the same time with the entry in the extra- linguistic reality of the objects they describe, thus, introducing the novelty, the notion unknown until that time. Consequently, the lexical and the semantic borrowings are simultaneous. In Romanian, most borrowings are the result of the contacts between the speakers and the languages of the neighbour nations. That is why we shall name them direct borrowings. Nevertheless, there is also a large number of examples of borrowings, as well as direct ones, but distant from each other in both time and space, coming from the languages with cultural and/or scientific tradition, which we shall name cultural borrowings. In both cases, they represent a lexical richness determined by Romanian’s territorial and stylistic expansion. Each borrowing that entered Romanian language has its own history, an adventurous journey from start to destination, best illustrated by adaptation. |
