Abstract: | [The Istro-Romanian supine] On the basis of a corpus study the author shows that Istro-Romanian (a severely endangered historical dialect of Romanian, spoken in Istria, Croatia) possesses a non-finite verb-form morphologically identical to the Daco-Romanian supine. This form is used not only in contexts common to those of Daco-Romanian but also in specific contexts. After analysing the possible explanations for the existence of the supine in Istro-Romanian, the author hypothesizes that: the supine is an independent development of Istro-Romanian; it is not related to the Daco-Romanian supine and it is not influenced by the Croatian supine (being absent in the Croatian dialect spoken by bilingual Istro-Romanian speakers in the area). |
