| Abstract: | The aim of this paper is to sum up the main theories and concepts regarding the pragmatics. The sources of the new disciplines are highlighted, starting with Ferdinand de Saussure (the dichotomy langue/parole) and Noam Chomsky (the dichotomy competence/performance). The main theories that are presented are those related to J.L Austin`s contribution to language acts, concept subsequently developed from a descriptive point of view by J.R Searle; and by H.P Grice who introduces the so-called principle of cooperation and the notion implicature. Another orientation is the cognitivist one which is illustrated by D. Sperder`s and D. Wilson`s name and by the principle of pertinence. From Europe, Emile Beneviste`s and Oswald Ducort`s theories were presented. Romanian linguists` contributions were also highlighted in the research about pragmatics (Sanda Golopenția, Maria Manoliu Manea, Liliana Ionescu-Ruxăndoiu, Rodica Zafiu, Ariadna Ștefănescu). |
