Abstract:
[Multiple Frame Narrative Structures in “Working and Chatting on the Green” by Anton Pann] Anton Pann is a folklore collector who looks at the village mentality from the outside, as a mere urban onlooker. Dialogue predominates – both quantitatively and qualitatively − in the analysed text. Failed communication becomes the subject of the story told and a source of humour – which also obtains by the absurd accumulation of repeated motifs. Frame multiplication is more pronounced in this narrative text, which testifies to the importance attached by the author to the communication situations. To the first frame, represented by Nuncle Albu’s trip, and to the second frame, featuring the encounter on the green for chatting while working – both of them general frames, are added further (alternative) frames or maybe a single third frame is added, consisting of Nuncle Popa’s narrative, which is analysed here in more detail. It can be noticed how the narrative motif becomes lesser and lesser, while commentaries increase in number. We have analysed the various causes of the comic failure of the communication, concluding our study with a description of the conflicting cue exchanges between spouses – which, characteristically for the comments in the third frame(s), end in pointless violence. In this writing, Anton Pann is focusing reflexively upon human communication; this has prompted us to consider meta-communication this case of focusing upon the processes of communicating experiences about communication.
