Abstract:[Functions of Backchannels in the Individual Interview] The paper investigates the role of backchannels in the sociological individual interview. It is based on a corpus of four transcripts (115 pages) made after four face-to-face interactions, part of the same market study concerning food products. The analysis revealed six functions of backchannels: expressing consent, discursive support, acting surprised, information request, guiding the discussion and changing the topic. To my knowledge, it is the first investigation of this kind, which complements the sociological perspective with linguistic data, and might bring a new insight to the phenomena.
