Abstract:[Unusual Speech Genres in Formal Settings: Gossip and Self-disclosure] Speech genres such as gossip and self-disclosure are not likely to occur in the verbal interaction of the institutionalized setting, due to the fact that such an interactional frame implies pre-given role features. Consequently, the casual conversation represents a different type of interaction which is not consistent with the formal elements of the institutional talk frame. According to Vion, the occurrence of a casual conversational sequence involves perceiving different talk realities and shifting from the formal register to the informal one. Herein, we attempt to analyse the ways that gossip and self-disclosure, most likely to occur in institutionalized interactions within the Romanian culture, are strategically engaged in order to enact dramaturgical talk performances, in the very sense that Erving Goffman used when defining communication as symbolic interactionism.
