| Abstract: | In this paper we look at the parametric setting for obligatory control in Old Romanian and at the way it is implemented at the level of clause structure. The main argument is that obligatory control in Old Romanian has the parametric setting for Balkan languages, but uses Romance morphology to check and spell out the functional features involved in the Balkan pattern of derivation. As a result, some syntactic innovations arise that negotiate between the underlying Balkan OC structure and the morpho-syntactic properties of the Romance lexical items that feed it. In particular, we identify a push-and-pull cycle in the mapping of Fin features, by which Fin is initially split to allow for the reanalysis of complementizers within the Balkan OC pattern, and then remerged once this reanalysis is established. |
