Abstract:[Surnames derived with the suffix -escu. Statistical considerations]
The paper makes a comparative analysis of the conclusions reached by Victor Vascenco, Gheorghe Bolocan and Teodor Oancă regarding the frequency of surnames ending in -escu. Our research, which involved the processing of Romania’s Anthroponymic Database, resulted in a number of 715 surnames ending in -escu whose frequency is higher than 100. We mention these names in the three appendices at the end of this study, specifying their absolute frequency, the surnames they originate from and the frequency of the latter. Statistics show that surnames ending in -escu range between 1 and 29 per cent compared to the frequency of the names of origin. This is a proof of the fact that the process of adopting surnames in -escu was not a mass phenomenon and it ended only after 1920.
