Abstract:In the Eastern Romance, linguistically more conservative sector of Romania, the suffix –aticus remained adjectival, at least in the standard languages, though the dialects offer evidence of noun formation. Semantically, the adjectival formatives retained the basic meaning of ‚pertaining to, characteristic of’, inherited from antiquity. While these qualifiers were attested in any number of referential spheres, they seemed to concentrate in a few: human qualities and traits, mental and physical imbalances, toponymy, agriculture.
Another peculiarity of the Rumanian development stems from the fact that although the language in its grammatical structure is clearly Romance, its lexicon has been heavily infiltrated by extraneous elements, namely from Slavic, Hungarian and Turkish.
All these phenomena which distinguish Rumanian from its sister Romance tongues were inevitably conditioned by the external history of language.
But in the splinter dialects of Rumanian (Arumanian and Megleno- Rumanian) we find a more advanced state than in Daco-Rumanian, since in these dialects –atic already shows noun-forming power.
