Abstract: | Self-translation has finally been deemed a topic worthy of study. In addition to ongoing research on canonical authors, the focus has recently shifted to include minority writers who translate themselves in order to reach a larger audience. For them, however, self-translation can become a double-edged sword: while heightening their profile, their translations can marginalize work done in the minority source-language, thus confirming the dominant position of the majority target-language. On the textual level, the question whether self-translations are “mere” translations or actual rewritings, cannot be answered in absolute terms either but will also depend on the prevailing attitudes in the target literary system. |
