Abstract:This articles studies the French version of Mal vu mal dit and the English self-translation, Ill Seen Ill Said, in order to ascertain to what extent some aspects of the text written in French, a foreign language for Beckett, are maintained when the text is re-written in the author’s mother tongue. Which of these will be as “ill said” in both languages? What strategies does the self-translator adopt in order to keep the “ill said” of the title? Is it a question of “ill” translating the text?
