Abstract:The article discusses the words harturghie and hărturărie meaning both “paper-mill”; harturghie used to denominate old paper-mills during the late 18th century. The word appears in a document dated 1776 in which Alexander Ipsilanti granted certain rights to those willing to build a paper-mill and practise the trade of paper making. The word χαρτουργία (meaning paper-mill) is supposed to be created in relation with the word δερματουργία (meaning tannery). From the word harturghie (in Greek χαρτουργία) derived the Romanian word hardughie, meaning “big, shabby building”. The word hărturărie was not found in the charter issued in January 1796 by Alexandru Moruzi, as suggested by E. Vârtosu, hence the question tag in the title.
