| Abstract: | The origin of the 3rd person dative plural clitic le has not been correctly explained in the historical linguistic literature on Romanian. I argue that the common Romanian form of the clitic was lă. This form either directly comes from Lat. illorum by several exceptional reduction processes linked to the clitic character, or, more probably, has emerged by analogy: at a certain stage of (proto-)Romanian, the clitics not marked for gender all looked like reduced forms with respect to the strong forms, preserving only the initial segment consonant + vowel. In such a system, the strong dative plural loru had to be associated with *lo, which has regularly evolved to lă. The replacement of nă and lă by ne and le, which only took place in the Daco-Romanian dialect, quite late (the most ancient texts still have nă and lă), appeared as a result of an oscillation in the clitic system due to the ‘velarisation’ of e (the e>ă shift after labials not followed by front vowels), which created a me/mă oscillation for the 1st singular accusative clitic me. This oscillation triggered the emergence of ne/nă and le/lă pairs (and probably also *ve/vă). Finally, the oscillation was interpreted according to the velarisation rule (possibly because the velarisation shift itself was gradually spreading throughout Daco-Romanian), so that the forms in -e were generalized after dentals and laterals (ne and le) and those in -ă after labials (mă and vă). |
