Abstract:The aim of the present research is to contrast the degree of grammaticalization of factitive operators in Romanian, French, Spanish and Italian. While Fr. faire, Sp. hacer and It. fare function as free morphemes, i.e., grammatical markers, Rom. a face and its contextual synonyms (a da, a căuta, a pune, a lăsa) do not display morphological traces of grammaticalization, but they lack semantic and, partly, syntactic autonomy.
Key words:Lexical Functional Grammar, periphrastic causatives, argument structure of causatives, causative operators, complex predicates, degrees of grammaticalization, the causative continuum
Language: French
