Abstract:In the eleventh book of his Etymologiae (De homine et portentis), Isidore of Seville implicitly suggests a taxonomy of nature which can be classified into ordinary and extraordinary. By analizing the latter, I am proposing a diagram which considers the marvelous and the montruous as two subdivisions of the extraordinary nature, marked respectively by the use of the mir- / stup- radicals and by the synonymic series portenta, ostenta, monstra, prodigia. This paper aims to provide an analysis of the Isidorian vocabulary of the monstrous by considering the background of grammatical and theological sources used by Isidore. Such an account will hopefully highlight the rationalist approach of the Sevillan encyclopedist.
Key words:Isidore of Seville, medieval encyclopedia, marvelous, monstrous
