In this paper, the autonymy is presented as a universal datum of the natural languages and as a fundamental element of the metalanguage. Within this framework, our main purpose is to define the term and make a distinction between language and metalanguage, on the one hand, and, inside the metalinguistic field, between autonyms and metalinguistic terms stricto sensu, on the other hand. The focus on autonymy aims at emphasizing its characteristics at different levels and at pointing out the specificity of this technique in Romanian, as compared with other languages.
