Abstract: | The Romanian adj. creţ is inherited form the Eastern VLat. lexical hybrid *crĭcius, issued from the contamination between Lat. crĭ(spus) and its synonym VLat. (adj.) *(ē)ricius “curly, crimp, crisp”, cf. It. riccio, Sp. rizo idem. Alb. (lakën) kreçe, krece “headed cabbage, savoy (cabbage with crisp leaves)”, (fik) krec “wrinkled (fig)” are borrowed from Vlat. *crĭcius/Old Common Rom. *creciu. Alb. krecë “needle (leaf), spine, thorn, fishbone” is borrowed from Vlat. (pl.) *crĭcia/Old Common Rom. *creţə, etymologically/ semantically related to VLat. (adj.) *ēricium “of the hedgehog” → “spine, quill etc.”. Alb. (pl.) krelë / krela “curl”, krela-krela “curly” are autochtonous words, compared with Lett. krails “bowed, bent, wrinkled”, OHG krol “curly”, OHG. kral “hook”, ME crolle, crul “curl” etc. |
