Abstract:In her novel, The Sad Mother’s Song, the Berlin writer of Romanian origin, Carmen Francesca Banciu, depicts the image of a woman, of a relationship mother-daughter and of an already historical epoch in today’s Romania. The main character, Maria-Maria, recounts her childhood and adolescence, spent in the years of a totalitarian society, in the family of parents who were truthful followers of the Communist Party ideology, a family in which feelings were replaced, with brutality, by the dogma of the new man’s duty towards the state, the party and the socialist society. The present paper analyses the rhetoric of this novel, in search of an equilibrium formula between epic and aesthetic or, with the author’s words, between narrative preciseness and poetical vibration. The stylistic formula found by the author – a laconic prose relying on synecdoche and leitmotif - is a consequence of the double „migration“: from the mother language, Romanian, to an „adoptive“ one, German, and from the style of Romanian literature of the 80’s to an original one.
Key words:laconism, rhetoric of synecdoche and leitmotif, migration, mother-image, mother-myth
