Abstract:By “strange words” this author refers to rare vulgar Greek words (βάβο βίτζα, βέργα, καραούσι, κατούνα, ὄμπρος, etc.) which are not always attested in dictionaries. They are compiled in a Greek vulgar text (16th century), which has been transmitted only in several manuscripts. The text was translated from Slavic into Greek and later copied by Greek scribes. It is to decide whether these words were really used and accepted by the scribes. The next step, if possible, would be to interpret these words and to find etymologies for them.
Key words:Balkanität, “ghost words”, Slavic, Greek, Romanian, Europäisierung
