Abstract:The paper starts from the observation that in the Etymologiae of Isidorus of Sevilla one can classify the extraordinary phenomena and beings into two classes with regard to the vocabulary which the author employs to designate them: on the one hand there is the monstruous, designated by the synonymic series portenta, ostenta, monstra, prodigia; on the other – the marvels designated by the mir-/stupradicals. By examining the Isidorian vocabulary of marvels we proposed a taxonomy and an analysis of the occurrences of this vocabulary in order to find out whether the category of the marvelous is present in Isidorus’ Etymologiae. This investigation reviews the status of Isidorus’ major work as a source of the medieval marvelous that is an overwhelming presence in erudition and fiction of the twelfth and the thirteenth centuries.
