Abstract:
Our paper aims at researching the etymology of some oriental street names from the view point of historical toponymy. It comparatively describes the Persian, Arabic, Turkish or Balkanic etymologies established by Lazăr Şăineanu in Influenţa orientală asupra limbei şi culturii române, by Dicţionarul limbii române, by Alexandru Graur in Dicţionar de cuvinte călătoare and by Emil Suciu in Influenţa turcă asupra limbii române. It tries to explain the semantic motivation of these names in the largest context of the history of Bucharest, taking into consideration the toponymical principles set out by Adrain Rezeanu in Toponimie bucureştană, by Alexandru Graur in Nume de locuri and by Iorgu Iordan in Toponimie românească.
