| Abstract: | This article deals with derivation which is subject to a semantic perspective: the number of meanings affixes can have (thus discussing about monosemous and polysemous affixes, and also about homonyms), the semantic relations that affixes can establish among each other (synonymy, antonymy), the semantic relations that hold between the stems and the derived words (synonymy, antonymy, cohyponymy, meronymy, holonymy and many others like state, place, job, experiencer, container, etc.). We present the characteristics of derivational relations, that, alongside semantic ones, connect word meanings in speaker’s mind. At a multilingual level, the semantic dimension of derivational relations allows for comparing corresponding pairs of words that may or may not display a morphological (i.e. derivational) link between them, with the same or with a different direction of the derivational process involved. |
