Abstract:The paper has a two-fold aim. First, it aims to distinguish syntactically between lower cardinals in Romanian (1-19) and higher cardinals in Romanian (19 ˂). Second, it purports to analyze degrees of ‘nouniness’ of Romanian cardinals and classify cardinals in Romanian according whether they behave adjectivally, nominally or semi-lexically. Data from unrelated languages will be discussed in support of this analysis and competing approaches to the syntax of cardinal-noun constructions will be analyzed and evaluated. It will be shown that lower cardinals in Romanian behave adjectivally and have a different syntax from that of higher cardinals, which behave nominally.
