| Abstract: | [Wordplay in Subtitling: Translation Problems] The aim of this paper is to analyse the various types of wordplay present in sitcoms on the basis of a corpus including several episodes of American sitcoms (The Nanny, Seinfeld, Friends, Mad about You). The examples extracted from the corpus will be classified according to the linguistic mechanism which trigers the humorous effect taking into account several criteria, even if the strategies used in their translation may differ. We also intend to identify and highlight the factors which might influence the translatability of humour, in general, and that of wordplay, in particular, in the context of subtitling. |
