Abstract:The purpose of this research is to illustrate the forms of manifestation of the descriptive discourse in postmodernist prose, especially by studying the parody mechanism in this type of text, as a new trend of this kind of narrative.
Thus, the corpus has been a selection of texts integrated into the novel A Hundred Years at the Eastern Gates, written by the postmodernist writer Ioan Groşan, considered representative for demonstrating the role and the place of description in postmodernist narrative, as well as the manner in which parody influences all levels of building the descriptive discourse: lexical, morphosyntactic, semantic, stylistic, type of emphasis, position of lecturer.
The research stems from the suggestion offered by a rhetorical question which Mihaela Mancaş formulates in her vast study on description, Picture and action. Description in Romanian narrative prose, about “the decay of description” in postmodernism and followed the way in which such an idea finds justification in Ioan Groşan’s novel.
The study took into consideration defining the concept and the role of the description in postmodernism, the insertion of parody in the descriptive text, the tendency to recompose styles or texts and the role of the quoting technique in recreating the literary work.
The conclusion reached was that the Ioan Groşan’s text is representative for considering description a way of using the text as a whole, as a self-goal option, that is description in itself and for itself, as a utopia of postmodernist language.
