Abstract:[Conversational history – a pragmatic concept]
The pragmatic concept of conversational history (CH) was introduced in Golopentia (1980) and developed in Golopentia (1985, 1988c, 1988d, 1988d, 1996b, 2000a, 2000b, 2001) in a linguistic, sociolinguistic, and semiotic framework. It is centered on (a) considering (all) verbal interactions occurring between, or shared by, the same set of interlocutors; (b) defining the series thus obtained as a dynamic whole with distinctively evolving syntactic, semantic and pragmatic properties; (c) considering that, as a whole, CH represents an important and revealing object of study for linguists, sociolinguists, and semioticians interested in the reciprocal communicative adjustment of interlocutors and their ways of maintaining a dynamic conversational relation etc.; (d) developing strategies of conventional limitation that would transform even the most complex CH into realistic objects of study; (e) positioning CH as a superordinate pragmatic unit in the theoretical hierarchy starting from turn and progressing toward conversation: {turn, exchange, sequence, section, conversation, conversational history}; (f) taking into consideration not only external, but also inner conversations as ordinary components of a CH; (g) accounting for combinations of conversational histories into complex structures that can help us better understand our spoken lives in reality or in fiction. We discuss partial (syntactic or semantic) and total (pragmatic) descriptions of a CH.
