| Abstract: | [Revisiting terminological variation in meteorological terminology. Case study: the terminological syntagm ploaie care îngheaţă (‘freezing rain’) in contemporary mass-media] Starting from a theoretical approach adopted in a recent study (Grigore 2015), this paper continues the descriptive-linguistic examination of terminological (denominative) variation in meteorological terminology. The analysis underlines the importance held by mass-media in the dissemination of scientific knowledge in contemporary society. Additionally, the analysis emphasises the role of the linguistic context in which a terminological unit appears. From a practical perspective, the paper takes into account the concurrence of different linguistic means of expressing the meteorological phenomenon of freezing rain. The resulting denominative variation and contextual synonymy are thoroughly investigated in several excerpts found in news programmes broadcast by Romanian TV channels or online versions of Romanian newspapers. |
