Abstract:Our research aims to prove to what extent the fundamentally positive meaning (as indicated in the dictionaries) of the three lexemes expressing the wonder concept in Romanian, French and Spanish (cf. Rom. a [se] minuna, Fr. [s’]émerveiller and Sp. maravillar[se]) is also valid for the contemporary use of these verbs. To be more specific, we try to establish to what extent the correlation, at the discourse level, between these lexemes and the stimuli can generate only positive experiences. Our analysis comprised the dissociation between (a) the religious (Christian) discourse, where these verbs lexicalize intensive-positive meaning par excellence and (b) the lay discourse, the coloquial register of current Romance languages, where we can prove, at least for Romanian, the semantic polarization phenomenon (for instance, the occurence of Rom. a minuna in the same context with negative [contextual or intrinsec] stimuli). In this approach, we took into account multiple aspects: the etymological issue, the specific historical, economic and cultural conditions in which have evolved, on one hand, the Romanian language and on the other hand, the Western Romance languages, and, last but not least, the decadence of postmodern society, a secular society par excellence.
