Abstract: | Euphimisation is a vital process in acts of communication in all languages. Considered a universal phenomenon, euphemisms have been examined in various aspects related to their origins, functions and their evolution in time. Euphemisms fill in the vacancies in the language system, because their appearance is dictated by various communication needs. At the same time, euphemisms, formed by means of word-building devices typical of the Romanian vocabulary, are distinguished from other units by a relevant characteristic: euphemistic words and word combinations, which maintain their status as language units with an intrinsic lexical meaning form a new entity. The relationship between euphemism and other phenomena such as vulgarisms, jargonisms, barbarisms, slang, euphemisms, regionalisms are among the innovative aspects touched upon in this article. Some scholars often confuse euphemisms with the above-mentioned linguistic phenomena. |
