The present paper aims to discuss matters related to the influence of English upon other idioms and to focus on the Italian language, as well as to present the antagonistic attitudes towards the process of borrowing words of English origin in Italian and the outcome of this process. It also illustrates the opinions of linguists, journalists and laymen about the possibility of Italian losing its own identity as a language in front of the “avalanche” of English loan-words.
