Abstract: | The paper deals with the irrealis complementation strategies in Southern Calabrian. It is shown that the complementizer introducing embedded infinitivals (and irrealis clauses in general), i.e. MODO, lexicalises different positions in accordance with the selecting matrix predicate. Three different categories of MODO clauses identified, each of which exhibits a unique set of structural properties. Thus, MODO is a functional head that can be associated with multiple categories and a dependent marker. |
