Abstract:[Toponym-based derivatives (the letter I)]
Lexical constructions derived from toponymic bases do not constitute a significant sector among internal lexical creations which may be considered national distinctive features. The shift from the status of proper name given to a known place towards the one of an often adjectivised common noun takes place by means of a derivational suffix, and in Romanian -ean/-an is a rather productive suffix in this respect. Subsequent adjectives result from the addition of the aforementioned suffix to a toponym or its root, through the substitution of the suffix that was formerly attached to the proper name with the specialized suffix indicating origin.
Key words:derivation, suffix, lexical, toponym
