Abstract:[Possible worlds and types of referential expressions]
This article proposes an account within a framework of possible world semantics of the major types of referential expressions (nominals) in natural language. The question of what constitutes a possible world is discussed, the relevance of this concept to the study of meaning is assessed, the issue of transworld identity is examined, and rigid designators as well as nonrigid designators are distinguished. The former category (rigid designators) subsumes proper names and names of species, colors and substances (natural kinds), while the latter (nonrigid designators) subsumes, among others, definite descriptions and fictional names. Finally, the nature of fictional names is described.
Key words:possible worlds, transworld identity, rigid designators, nonrigid designators, proper names, fictional names, definite descriptions
