Abstract:Colour has been present, directly or indirectly, since the beginning of time, in all the areas of our daily life. Subsequently, colour terminology is to be found in a great variety of domains, sciences, and industries, starting from physics and chemistry to medicine, sociology, marketing, gastronomy, cosmetics industry, interior design, architecture, cartography, astronomy, museology, visual arts and last but not least ethnography. However, in spite of its wide usage in so many fields of human activity, there are few linguistic studies dedicated to this subject. The aim of this article is to emphasize the richness of the Romanian colour terminology, especially of the popular terminology and to analyze briefly a few of its defining aspects (historical origin, etymology, synonymy and polysemy).
Key words:colour terminology, popular terms, synonymy and polysemy
Language: Romanian
