| Abstract: | The paper aims to illustrate how Ienăchiță Văcărescu’s grammar, Observații sau băgări de seamă asupra regulelor și orânduelelor grammaticii rumânești presents the tense system of 18th century Romanian, focusing on conservative approaches (it records solely iotacized forms: văz, simț, să simț, să pociu for verbs in the first person, present indicative and subjunctive, and etymological forms of perfect simple and pluperfect) as well as on modern approaches (it records, for the first time in the history of Romanian grammar, the form with the auxiliary a for 3rd person singular, compound perfect, used at that time only in Muntenia, not the one with the auxiliary au, frequently used in all three historical provinces). |
