Abstract:[Conventional and unconventional in the naming of the independent states of the world]
Certain overlapping between the terms conventional – unconventional has been confirmed: the unofficial names result, in fact, similarly to the official names, from a sociolinguistic convention.
The description of unofficial names of world states includes their structure (which consists of a word or a phrase that comprises a common name – for a characteristic of the specific state – and/or a proper noun); the tropes on which certain names are based; the existence of group names; semantic relations (homonymy, synonymy) between some unofficial world state names; the correspondence with names of inhabitants, languages, sports teams and currencies.
Key words:conventional, unconventional, unofficial, world state names, official
