Abstract: | [Appropriateness and inappropriateness of results of transonymic processes] The definition of conventional vs. unconventional in onomastics sets out some preliminary interpretation questions. One could consider 1a. conventional what is official, formal, recorded in civil registries and administrative documents or on topographic maps, and 1b. unconventional what is informal and pertaining to the oral tradition or the unwritten, informal registry. At the same time, 2a. conventional can be what is part of a consolidated tradition and 2b. unconventional, what represents originality and innovation. Similarly, one could associate 3a. the conventional with what is natural and 3b. the unconventional with what is motivated. Anyway, these interpretations do not seem to be completely convincing, or at least exhaustive. The paper introduces a new concept in the study of “onymic conventionality”, that is, the results of transonymic processes, the passages of a proper name from a certain typology of onymic status to a different one. What is proposed here considers unconventional what is not appropriate/adequate in the combination of a proper name specific to a certain typology and a referent belonging to a different category. |
