Abstract:[Conventional elements in Romanian toponymy]
Place names assembled in different epochs – derived from appellatives, specific to different foreign languages – are included in the Romanian toponymic system. In spite of their foreign origin, Romanians do not consider them non-native words, since in each epoch the system shapes such toponyms, granting them a unitary character. While analyzing place names, we should take into consideration the important part of the distinct aspects of history as an auxiliary science: general, regional and local historical aspects, political and economic aspects, institutional and religious aspects. These theoretical issues are illustrated by means of place names that are representative for the Romanian toponymic system: 1. Toponyms evoking Emperor Traian (Calea Troianului, Pratul lui Traian, Piaţa Traian, Liceul Traian, Troianul Cerului); 2. a) Toponyms reflecting Romanian hermit-like life (Scaunele, Sihăstria), b) Toponyms of Catholic origin (Remetea, Remeţi, Rimetea, Râmeţi); 3. Toponyms evoking the cult of Virgin Mary in Transylvania, in areas populated by Catholic Hungarians, included in a European topopymic system (Sântă Măria, Sântămăria de Piatră, Sântămăria-Orlea, Sântămărie).
