Abstract:[Nicknames on the Sălăuța Valley]
Anthropology is an important source of knowledge of history, languages and people. In a territorial unit of small dimensions, an individual is more likely recognized by his/her nickname, which establishes a bond between his/her person and the community. A nickname describes an individual, highlighting one’s defining feature, even if his/her consciousness refuses to accept this truth.
This article proposes an analysis of nicknames from the villages located on the Sălăuța Valley, a place that is still touched by the echoes of George Coșbuc’s muses. The nicknames became in time reflections of the major moments from people’s material and spiritual lives, revealing their traditions, occupations, superstitions, as well as their physical and moral appearance. The article describes the nicknames given to the people who used to work downstream Sălăuța, having as a theoretical model the classification made by Aureliu Candrea, which is diversified and possibly completed. The author presents an anthropological perspective on of the territory of the Sălăuța Valley, clarifying different problems and aspects concerning the etymology and formation of the investigated names.
Both nicknames and surnames of the present families mirror the realities of the past. They provide important information concerning the restoration of certain steps in the history of our language and reflect the image of the representative individual for the rural universe.
Therefore, the nicknames can also be investigated from the perspective of their construction, giving proof of the profile of the Romanian language at a certain moment in its historical past.
As methodology, we will make use of information from anthropology, language history, grammar, ethnology and history.
